ABOUT NICO

The first question voters ask any candidate is
“Why are you running?”

I’m running because I love California, and I’m heartbroken to see what’s happening to our incredible communities under current state leadership. We can do better — we will do better. Despite our challenges, I know that our state’s best days lie ahead.

It’s going to take a fundamental shift from politics as usual to get us there. District 24 deserves a leader who will tackle the issues we see in front of our homes day in and day out. I’ll stand up to the special interests that have hijacked housing, homelessness, job creation, and public safety.

I’m not a political insider. I’m a proud father, independent business owner, union member, and dedicated community advocate. I’m also a lifelong environmentalist.

I’m not new to serving my community. I’ve led grassroots political campaigns, spearheaded the removal of disease and crime-plagued homeless encampments near schools and playgrounds, and worked to keep our precious beaches clean. I’ve done the little things, too, like helping get stop signs installed at dangerous intersections. To further my service, in 2021 I ran for the Venice Neighborhood Council. I’m in my third term.

We need new approaches to solve stubborn challenges. Key issues include housing affordability, slowing economic growth, public safety, and homelessness. We see the results of failed policies everyday. Californians from all walks of life deserve better.

A BIT MORE ABOUT ME

I’ve called Venice Beach home for 18 years. I’m raising my incredible son here. Living in Venice is part of my lifelong environmentalism. In my younger days I worked as a whitewater rafting guide and a ski instructor. Particularly in the wake of January’s devastating fires, protecting and restoring our natural spaces will be among my top priorities.

Professionally, I’ve worked as a sound engineer in film and television for more than 25 years. It’s not just my career, it’s my passion. I’ve mentored and trained scores of professionals who have gone on to fulfilling careers of their own. I have a deep understanding of both the opportunities and challenges facing these critical California industries in the modern era.

I also remember what it’s like to work as a house painter, waiter, and cashier. I’ve volunteered throughout my life at City Meals on Wheels, which my stepmother founded.

My varied life experiences uniquely suit me to tackle challenges and seize opportunities for the people who call this amazing place home. Together we’ll ensure that those best days are ahead of us!

PRIORITIES

  • Family with two children walking in a park, parents lifting daughter by hands.

    Livable, Affordable Communities & Neighborhoods

The housing affordability crisis is hurting hardworking California from all walks of life and nearly all income levels. We need policies that make housing more affordable while preserving the character of our neighborhoods. We must ensure that growth doesn’t come at the cost of the features that make California’s cities and towns so special. Most of all, we need to rein in Sacramento’s housing overreach and restore authority to cities and communities.

  • Sign on a window with "Help Wanted" in bold letters.

    Economic Vitality & Growth

Southern California is an economic engine. If Los Angeles County were a country, it would be among the world’s ten largest economies. From the entertainment industry to technology, manufacturing, tourism, and agriculture, our region is home to a diverse array of sectors that fuel not just California’s economy but the nation’s.  I’m committed to driving sustainable economic growth and creating local jobs. We must invest in these industries, and support the small businesses and entrepreneurs that are the backbone of our local economies.

  • Film crew shooting a scene with actors near a car.

    Bring Hollywood Home

It’s no secret: California’s entertainment industry is struggling. This is personal to me. I’ve made my career in the industry as a sound engineer. I’ve experienced firsthand the challenges the industry faces. I will support and strengthen the industry, particularly by seeking tax breaks and other incentives to keep production here where it belongs. I’ll fight to ensure that California remains the global leader in entertainment production.

  • Nico Ruderman will focus on prevention, preparedness, and resilience, ensuring that we are ready to face the increasing threat of wildfires and other natural disasters.

Natural Disaster Prevention, Preparedness & Resiliency

California is no stranger to the devastating impacts of natural disasters. The January 2025 wildfires in Los Angeles brought into stark relief just how crucial it is to be proactive in protecting our communities. I will focus on prevention, preparedness, and resilience, ensuring that we are ready to face the increasing threat of wildfires and other natural disasters. This means investing in better fire prevention measures, such as clearing brush and creating defensible spaces, building new housing with fire resistant, resilient materials, undergrounding utility lines, and increasing the use of controlled burns in fire prone areas.

  • Nico Ruderman is committed to addressing our homelessness by focusing on mental health and addiction, two of the biggest drivers of street homelessness.

Homelessness: Real Solutions & Real Accountability

California’s homelessness crisis is the shame of our state. It cannot be said more clearly: Our current approach is a catastrophic failure. For years, tens of billions of taxpayer dollars have been allocated to combat homelessness, yet the situation metastasized from a problem to a humanitarian disaster of historic proportions. Audit after audit reveals that public agencies and “nonprofits” consistently fail to deliver the promised results. I will demand a clean slate. We must focus on mental health and addiction, two of the biggest drivers of street homelessness. We also must do everything reasonable to prevent people from falling into homelessness in the first place.

  • Nico Ruderman will champion policies that preserve our parks, natural areas, and wildlife habitats.

    Sustain & Restore Environmental Health

Protecting our environment is not just a priority; it’s an essential part of securing a healthy future for Californians. I will champion policies that preserve our parks, natural areas, and wildlife habitats. California’s landscapes are part of what makes our state unique, and we must act to protect them from urban sprawl and development that threaten our environment. In Southern California, our mountains and beaches are among our most cherished natural spaces. By investing in conservation and responsible land-use planning, we can ensure that our communities enjoy access to nature while maintaining the biodiversity that makes California a global environmental leader.

  • Nico Ruderman will work to bring this balance to statewide policies, while cooperating with law enforcement and victims’ advocates.

Keep Our Families & Kids Safe

Californians have made clear that the soft on crime era is over. Los Angeles County voters gave incumbent District Attorney George Gascon his walking papers by electing challenger Nathan Hochman. In San Francisco they recalled one of his proteges, D.A. Chesa Boudin. And in 2024 California voters overwhelmingly passed Prop. 36. Californians are sending a clear message: While we remain compassionate, we expect lawbreakers to be held to account. The two impulses are not mutually exclusive, they’re complementary. I will work to bring this balance to statewide policies, while cooperating with law enforcement and victims’ advocates. We must be fair, and we all must be just.

  • Nico Ruderman will fight tirelessly to protect the most vulnerable members of our society and the places that are particularly susceptible to criminality.

    Safeguard Vulnerable Groups

I will fight tirelessly to protect the most vulnerable members of our society and the places that are particularly susceptible to criminality. I will work to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to thrive in District 24 and throughout California, regardless of their background, identity, or income. Equally important is protecting low-income communities, who are often the most impacted by violence and criminality. No one should be unsafe simply because of their economic status. Thanks to data from law enforcement agencies we know which communities are particularly susceptible to crime.
